Out of the thousands of colors available to choose from, how do you narrow it down and pick the right color palette for your room redesign? These expert tips are a great start! Mike, one of our Wenzinistas (designer) at Wenz, knows how to select and place color to create the perfect atmosphere.
Use the color wheel

When looking for effective color combinations, you can start by consulting the color wheel. Colors that are next to each other on the color wheel typically go well together – for example, blue and green, or red and orange.
That’s not to say that colors from both ends of the spectrum can’t fit well together in the right setting, but as a general guideline, the color wheel is a useful tool for creating pleasing color combinations.
Create balance from top to bottom

Color has an extraordinary way of creating balance based on the way it is used. A real textbook way to make your space look great with little risk is to decorate from dark to light, vertically.
This means using darker values for the floors, medium values for the walls, and lighter values for the ceiling. This mimics the exterior world as generally it is darker at our feet and lighter as you look upward. Choosing a color palette that has dark, medium, and light shades is a great way to ensure a put together look!
How’s the lighting?

Make sure you understand how light plays a role. Both natural light and light from lamps and light fixtures will change the value of the colors in the room. The nature of the light, including the brightness and hue, will affect how the colors look.
Also, pay attention to what time of the day natural light is present; if you are redesigning your living room (where you spend your time in the afternoon) and that room gets less natural light in the afternoon, you’ll want to adjust your color choices accordingly. A warm color palette is often best suited for rooms with less natural light to soften the shadows, whereas a cooler color palette is often well suited for rooms that receive a good amount of natural light throughout the day.
Pay attention to how certain colors make you feel

Color choices are highly subjective and will affect everyone differently. One person will feel at peace when exposed to a certain color, whereas another person will feel tense. Pay attention to how you respond to certain colors in connection with the atmosphere you are trying to create for your home.
Just remember, it’s your home; if you love a color combination that goes against the rules, run with it! At the end of the day, these are just some helpful tips to help you navigate the color selection process; don’t be afraid to listen to your instincts and go a different direction!
