It’s almost a new year, and change is on the horizon! Before you get started on your next design project, get inspired by reading through Benjamin Moore’s color trends for 2018.

The color trends highlighted by Benjamin Moore are focused around fresh, energetic hues, namely purple, pink, and red.

Lighthearted pinks and purples added to your home is a playful way to liven up your space, especially if you have a modern home focused around minimalism. A good example would be placing pastel pink and purple throw pillows on your grey couch for a playful pop of color.

If you live in a home where neutral colors dominate your color scheme, painting your door red is an option that would be a not-so-subtle way to create intrigue. Benjamin Moore highlighted this trend for coastal style homes where neutral blues and whites are prevalent colors in your entryway.

Another trend outlined is painting your kitchen area a bold red. You can create a modern farmhouse feel through this color choice, and automatically create a more open, homey atmosphere.

White and grey walls and cabinets with red accents offers a more subtle way to create warmth through this bold color.

Overall, the trends for 2018 revolve around the integration of bold, warm colors amongst neutral tones. Cool tones dominate, but fun pops of color are added throughout your space. This creates a solid balance of calm and active energy.

Color of the year

Benjamin Moore had to select from 3,500 colors and put in a lot of time and energy to determine the 2018 Color of the Year. After all the sweat and tears they determined that “caliente” is the color of 2018.

Caliente is a deep, bright red that immediately reminds you of a rich, flavorful wine. A freshly painted farmhouse should also give you an idea. It is bold and energetic, drawing the eye and not allowing you to look away.

Benjamin Moore describes red as a color that signifies change (very fitting when representing a new year) strength, drama, and desire. Overall, they describe the color as confidence.

This color is stunning as a wall color for your dining room or kitchen, especially because red typically encourages high energy and hunger.

Be mindful of how much light, especially natural, will be present in the room you plan on painting. This color has a striking difference in feel when in a darker space verses a lighter space.

A lighter space would offer more of a farmhouse feel when it comes to the quality of the color, whereas a darker space would offer more regal sophistication.

If you’re looking for something a little more subtle, painting the walls grey and then adding accents of caliente is a popular trend, and can also have a very powerful effect on the room as well.
