In a recent interview, Desiree shed some light on decorating during fall while keeping consistency with your style. She focused on the two styles that are the most opposite, rustic and modern.
Fall decorating for rustic and modern styles
Some styles are easier than others when it comes to incorporating fall décor into the home, but no matter what there are endless ways for you to put your own fun spin on fall decorating that reflects your taste.
Desiree provided some insight on two common styles, rustic and modern. For a more rustic style she says, “Rustic is a theme that fits really well into fall, because fall is all about creating warmth, and that’s a large part of rustic style.”
Therefore, if you have a rustic style a lot of the décor you already have will likely offer a very natural fall feel.
When it comes to more modern style home décor, you may need to have more finesse if you want to make choices that are consistent with your style. Modern decorating typically involves keeping everything open and spacious, with very little clutter.
Natural vs. sleek accent pieces
Desiree offered some very helpful tips as to how you can add fall accents to your home on both ends of the spectrum. If you have a rustic style, where nature is already largely incorporated, you can add some pieces that have an even stronger natural feel; perhaps items made from natural elements.
For example, you could add a vase made out of wood or twigs. A pine cone centerpiece in the dining room or living room is fun and inexpensive, and a great way to bring nature indoors. Potpourri in a bowl also makes a good centerpiece, as it smells great and is still a very natural centerpiece option.

If your style is more modern, you can add simple additions that will not clutter up your space.
Desiree suggests a throw blanket. She explains saying “throw blankets can add a little bit of the warmth, while not taking away from the sleekness of modern style.” She also suggested throw pillows that have fall phrases on them, as well as leaf patterned table runners.
Small, smooth pumpkin decorations, especially metallic ones, also have a sleek modern feel. These are subtle additions that can enhance the feeling of fall within a room, while not overwhelming it.

Integrating bold and subtle amounts color
With a rustic theme, the majority of the room consists of darker tones. Vibrant colors fit well amongst the earthier base tones during the fall season. Red, orange, and yellow are festive colors that can be integrated in both subtle and bold ways.
Artwork for a rustic theme is often inspired by nature, and this creates a great opportunity for hanging paintings with more color. Perhaps you can picture a painting of hunting dogs running after a pheasant with the beautiful fall trees in the background.
Adding artwork like this that incorporates the colors of fall and is a subtle way to create some contrast against the darker tones in your home.
Wrapping a leaf garland around the staircase railing, placing a leaf garland over the mantle, or creating a centerpiece centered around a cluster of fall leaves are more bold, fun ways to pull more color into the room for fall.

For a modern theme, the neutral tones of black, grey, and white are the common choices for color scheme. It’s up to you how much you would like to stray away from your color scheme when decorating for fall.
Generally, for modern style, small pops of color fit well into the neutral color scheme. It draws attention to certain areas of the room, and generates interest.
Some ways you can accomplish a bold rush of fall color could be through splatter painted pumpkins on your mantle, bright orange, red, and yellow throw pillows in your living room, or abstract fall paintings of leaves and nature.
Some ideas incorporating more subtle modern fall decorations in neutral colors might be to place metallic baby pumpkins on your coffee table or other fall decorations made out of wire.
