Choosing a mattress is a very intimate decision. Everyone has different comfort and health needs when it comes to their mattress, and because it has the power to affect the quality of your sleep, it can affect how you feel from morning until night each day.
A lot of factors play into selecting the perfect mattress, and with so many options available it can be hard to decide what you need. At Wenz, we’ll help you figure out exactly what you need in a mattress so that you can get your best sleep!
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you start your search.
Old vs. New

What made you decide to get a new mattress?
At Wenz, we will always ask what you liked and disliked about your old mattress and what you are looking for in a new mattress so that we can find you the best options for your needs. Identifying the specific things you are looking for helps to narrow your search right away.
If you aren’t sure exactly what you are looking for and what mattress will offer you the most comfort, our deisgners can take you through the options and help you figure out the best option for you.
What size mattress do you need?

Your height is the main determining factor when deciding on the size of your next mattress. If you and your partner are under 5’5 and you have a small bedroom, a full-sized mattress may be a good fit for you, but if you and/or your partner are above 5’5, you should have at least a queen-sized bed to comfortably fit your body size.
King-sized mattresses are also a good option for those who need more length to accommodate their height, as well for those who like to sprawl out. King-sized mattresses are known for being the best when it comes to undisturbed sleep, as they offer enough room for you to spread out and move around without disturbing your partner.
Unfortunately, they are not always a viable option. If you have narrow hallways and small doorways leading to your bedroom, delivery can be very difficult.
Also, if you have a small bedroom, the king-size bed will likely take up the entire space. If you are considering getting a larger sized mattress, measure out the dimensions of your room and make sure that you will have enough walking space around the bed.
What type of mattress do you need?

There are hundreds of different mattresses on the market today. You have your choice of innerspring, latex, memory foam, pillow-top, gel, and hybrid mattresses that all offer different benefits for your comfort and health. Doing the research on each mattress and testing out different kinds in-store can help ensure that you get the right mattress for you.
When looking to select the right mattress, it’s also important that you pay attention to what type of sleeper you are (side, back, stomach) because there are certain mattresses that work better for each type. For example, the memory foam mattress is recommended for a side sleeper because it relieves pressure points, and latex mattresses are recommended for stomach sleepers because they are typically firmer – which helps avoid the feeling of being swallowed up.
Advances in sleep technology have also allowed mattresses to have additional features designed to provide a higher level of comfort. If you are a hot sleeper, there are now mattresses that have cooling elements to help you stay cool. If you and your partner need different levels of support, you can now purchase mattresses that allow you and your partner to select your own individual firmness for each side of the bed.
The options are endless, and we can help you find the mattress that will offer you the right support and features for your best comfort!
Who is the mattress for?

It is also important to consider who will be using the mattress. The mattress that you buy for yourself is not likely to be the same mattress that you buy for your child or for the guest bedroom.
Let’s say that you are purchasing a mattress for your child. You will want to consider the same factors that you do for yourself, including size, support, and comfort. Adults get cranky when they don’t get a good night’s sleep; the same happens with children who don’t sleep well! It’s important for children to get quality sleep so they can feel well-rested, and their growing bodies and minds can achieve optimal physical and mental health.
Depending on your child’s age, twin, twin-xl, and full-size mattresses are the ideal choices. To decide on what mattress to get them in terms of support and comfort, get them involved in the decision process. Ask them if they like how your bed feels, what they like or don’t like, and pay attention to what position they sleep in to get some direction as to what mattress is the best choice for them.
When it comes to your guest bedroom, the mattress should be comfortable, but doesn’t need to be top-of-the-line. The mattress isn’t going to be used every night, and you won’t know exactly who will be using your guest bedroom each time, so a more generic, inexpensive mattress can be used.
Once you have considered the size mattress you need, what type of mattress is you need, and who will be using the mattress, you are well on your way to choosing the right mattress – and our knowledgeable designers are more than happy to help!
