Love Your Light

Another difficult aspect of designing a home is choosing the correct lighting for your rooms. Not only the style of light fixtures, but also the color of the lighting. It is commonly unknown that the color of lighting within a room will influence a person’s mood. So, it is important to be choosing your lighting wisely and accordingly. Luckily, Wenz is staffed with experts in design and can guide you to your perfect lighting!

Our in-house designer Mike Arendt expanded on the idea of appropriate lighting, and has some beneficial advice to give. Arendt is an educated and experienced designer that graduated from University of Wisconsin-Green Bay with a Bachelor’s in Art and Design. When asked why he chose to become a designer, he said, “I wanted to continue to be creative in my professional life, while simultaneously being able to connect with others and provide them with my innovative expertise.”

To start this off, it is important to know that there are two main goals of lighting; ambient and task. Ambient lighting is used for ambience, hence the name, and overall lighting. For example, you should be using ambient lighting to light up a living room. Versus task lighting, where it focuses on a single space to allow clear and precise vision, like a reading lamp next to a couch.

Now, these two goals will possibly require two different tones of lighting. Warmer lighting is often used to give a soft and welcoming appearance, whereas cool lighting is a lot more stark and rigid. It would be inappropriate to use cool lighting for ambience because the harsh lighting will create an unwelcoming vibe, which will be difficult to relax in. Arendt suggests using warmer tones for a more reasonable option for ambience because the softness of the light can help people relax and feel comfortable.

He also suggests not using warm tones for a task lighting goal because warmer tones happen to be slightly dimmer. The dim lighting could create difficulty with one’s precision, when task lighting is supposed to improve their vision. Cool lighting is the better choice because it has a brighter appearance, which will make it easier to see.
