Are you having difficulties organizing the furniture in your home? Does a room look disproportionate, or unbalanced? If so, you might not be taking advantage of your room’s focal point.
Today Desiree Nasto is going to expand on what a focal point is, how it works, and even narrow down a specific example.
Desiree is one of our in-house designers here at Wenz Home Furniture. She earned her degree from Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, which is what makes her a certified expert. When asked why she chose to be a designer, she said, “I love bringing out the highest potential a room has to offer. I want to make fashion meet function.”
Her desire to make fashion meet function is what makes her advice highly valuable. As a certified designer, it is within her expertise to make colors and styles match, but also to make decisions based on the customer’s convenience and their lifestyles.
A Focal What?
What exactly is a focal point, and why is it important to have one? Naturally, our eyes appeal to lines within a given space. Our eyes will follow these lines until they reach an ending spot, also known as a focal point. A focal point allows lines for the furniture to revolve around, making an organized appearance. Without lines for the furniture to follow, a room will feel scattered and unbalanced. Desiree strongly encourages the use of a focal point in a room. She is also a strong advocate for corner fireplaces, stating that they “have the capacity to be a dominant focal point, and they can tie an entire living room together”.
Usually, a fireplace is in the center of a wall, with the furniture facing it in a single parallel line. However, this placement of furniture can make it difficult for social interaction to occur. While sitting and facing the fireplace, others sitting around you will be placed just outside of our peripheral vision, which in turn will cause you to rotate your entire body to interact with them. So what happens when we put a fireplace in the corner? It actually bends the parallel lines towards each other. Because the fireplace is the focal point, the furniture is rotated to face it, but in order for everything to fit, the focal lines will be bent and curved. Now, instead of others sitting directly to your side, they will be angled so that they are more relevant in your line of vision, which can cause easier interaction, and even the closeness of the furniture calls for a more intimate and welcoming tone throughout the room. Also, because the furniture is facing the focal point (the fireplace), these ‘bent lines’ that they follow and their odd arrangement will still appear to be organized and balanced throughout the room.
