3 Tips On Finding the Right Home Office Furniture

The number of people working virtually from home keeps climbing. Having the opportunity to work from home can be a blessing or a curse. While working in your own space gives you the option of arranging your own hours and the freedom to set up your particular workspace, it also challenges you to be productive without letting in-home distractions affect you. Since you have the option to choose the furniture that goes into your personal office, you’ll want to put yourself in a position to be as productive as possible. Below are 3 tips to help you find the right home office furniture and to make you feel like your office is on the top floor, where business gets handled.

Dimensions

First thing’s first, we have to know what’s going to fit into the office space. One of the biggest mistakes in choosing furniture is under or overestimating how much space is available. Instead of estimating, play it safe by by taking measurements so you know exactly how far you can stretch your limits.

We have a great post that breaks down proportion and scale that you can read here.

Style

Do you know what design styles you enjoy? Do you know why you enjoy them? If not, you can read our post about different design styles here.

Keep in mind that the design style you decide to go with might not offer you the comfort that you need. For example; If you decide to go with a traditional chair, it may not be as comfortable as a contemporary chair that is flexible and adjustable. At the end of the day, it will come down to what you personally find comfortable. Maybe you would prefer to sit on a wood seat instead of a mesh material, and that’s okay. As long as you’re comfortable enough to be productive, that’s all that matters.

Functions

Home Office Desks:

While you are on the hunt for an office desk, think about how you plan to use your desk. If you only use the desk as a computer station and not for filing, consider going with a simple writing desk with minimum compartments. On the flip side, if you think you’ll be using the desk for a variety of activities, such as playing video games or eating, think about going with a sturdier desk with extra drawers for paperwork and office supplies. Another feature to look for in a desk is a slide out drawer for a keyboard and mouse.

Home Office Chairs:

The chances of you spending a lot of time in your home office are pretty high. The chances of you sitting in an office chair for lengthy periods of time are even higher, so you’ll want to find a chair that works well for you. Some questions to narrow your choices down are:

Do you want a swivel bottom or casters?

Do you want adjustable height or backrest?

Does it have adequate padding or lumbar support?

Do you want armrests?

Answering these questions will help you find the chair that’s best suited for your body and keep you comfortable during your work day.

File Cabinets and Storage:

As small as computers can be and as much storage memory they offer, paperwork may still stack up. It’s a good idea to have some type of file cabinet in your home office to keep everything organized and protected. If you don’t plan on filing much paperwork and are going with a writing desk, you can always buy some folder organizers that will handle the job. Otherwise, a short filing cabinet that has one filing drawer and maybe a couple of smaller drawers above it may suffice. Hutches provide convenient shelving above the desk for extra space. If a hutch doesn’t provide enough shelves, think about going with a full sized bookshelf for more storage space. Any of these items will keep paperwork organized and minimize time spent searching through it.
